ADDISON—York Hockey Club’s junior varsity team began its season with an impressive 5-3 win on home ice over New Trier Trevians, a traditional state power.  Strong goaltending and offensive contributions from the entire York squad helped lead the Dukes to victory.

“We have a lot of new faces on this team and we are really making an effort to get to know one another as people and as players,” said junior Zach Johnson.  “We are really coming together as a team and that was the biggest reason for our success tonight.”

York jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Matt Davis got a pass from freshman Liam Gardner and took a shot that the Trevians’ goalie was able to knock down.  Jack Foley, freshman, was in position and buried the rebound in the visitors goal to open the scoring.

After allowing two New Trier goals, the Dukes stormed back when Johnson stole the puck and chipped it up ice.  Freshman Matt Shephard collected the pass and scored on a high wrist shot.

Moments later, sophomore Jack Redick won a face-off to Gardner.  The freshman passed it to sophomore Scotty Blair and he carried the puck into the zone and put a hard shot on net.  Redick collected the rebound and shot the puck into the back of the net to take the lead.

Anthony Trankina, sophomore, scored an unassisted goal before sophomore Anders Caster sealed the victory when he scored a breakaway goal on a nifty forehand-backhand move.

Three freshmen goalies, Nolan Knupp, Shane Cassidy and Dylan Reynolds, combined to back stop the Dukes to victory.

“The boys were a little rusty early on,” said Coach Joe Fenzel.  “That being said, they showed improvement as the game went on but we still have a lot of work to do in order to play at the level, and achieve the success, this club has come to expect.”

York Hockey Club’s next home game will be Friday, September 12th, when Glenbrook South visits Addison Ice Arena.  The game is scheduled for a 7:05pm opening puck drop.
