Addison - The York Varsity hockey club dominates with a 7-1 win in their league home opener at Addison Ice on Oct 3.

York Varsity started the season off with a bang scoring four unanswered goals in the first period. The scoring spree began when hard-hitting senior defenseman Brandon Fuchsen directed a perfect pass to senior winger Matt Dufort, who then made a quick spin move in traffic and released a wrist shot that caught the DHS goalie off guard. The second York goal belonged to junior Grey Miller who initially scored on a hard ice level wrist shot that went in and out of the net so quickly the referee didn't see it go in. The puck caromed out to junior Joseph Levin who passed it back to Miller who buried it with authority for the second York goal.

The third York goal came seconds later when sophomore center Elliot Fafinski cleanly won the faceoff, pulled the puck back to junior Trevor Corsello who shot a wicked wrister that went five hole for the goal.

York's fourth goal came with less than a minute to go in the period when speedy senior Mitch Kurzweil skated the puck down the right side of the ice, put on the brakes near the offensive zone faceoff circle and made a pinpoint cross-ice pass between two DHS players to York senior Matt Sabatini who quickly hit Matt Dufort with a tape-to-tape pass. Dufort fired it in for his second goal of the evening, tic tac toe!

In the first half of the second period York found itself in a five-minute short-handed situation. Sophomore goalie Alex Crum was up to the challenge as he fought off all shots by the opposition including a beautiful toe save which kept DHS off the board. As DHS continued on their power play, York's Matt Dufort stole the puck at center ice and found himself on a one-man mission. He stick handled across the blue line, dangled through three DHS players and finished with a sweet top shelf wrist shot for the highlight goal. The short-handed hat trick goal was accomplished at 10:42of the second period.

To close out York's short-handed time, the three-man line of Matt Sabatini, Joseph Levin and Dan Byrne found themselves in a 5-on-3 situation. This trio worked extremely hard and kept DHS off the board. With less than two minutes to go in the 2nd period, Dufort wanted more and he got it, recording his fourth goal of the game after two nice dekes coming in from the blue line and finishing off the rush with a well-placed backhand shot/goal.

With the score 6-0, the third period would be played with a running clock. York's defense continued to dominate and only allowed three shots. Unfortunately one of the three shots found its way across York's goal line after a well-placed screen blocked Crum's sight line. Senior Frank Carbonetti played with tenacity and all out hustle the entire game, good things to come for Carbs this season with this type of effort. To finish the game off, York's Matt Sabatini received a pass from Grey Miller and let it rip from the point, the low hard slap shot found its way through a crowd and scored five hole just as sharpshooter Sabs planned.

York Varsity's next home game is Friday Oct 10 at 8:40pm vs. Wheaton West at Addison Ice.
