Romeoville -The York Hockey Club's varsity team improved their record to 5-3 in the Illinois West High School Hockey League this past weekend with a decisive 10-4 win versus Plainfield. The scoring began in the first period with senior Frank Carbonetti skating in all alone and firing a wrist shot past the Plainfield goalie, 1-0 York. York scored again at the 11:51 mark with good puck movement starting with a nice pass from junior Tom Sieracki to junior Joseph Levin who then fed junior Marcos Kapsalis for the easy tap in goal.

Plainfield scored with 19 seconds left to end the first period with York leading 2-1. Sophomore goalie Parker Stasica was between the pipes for York and he came up with several good saves to keep the game close.

In the second period, York scored five goals. The first goal of began with a clean faceoff win by senior center Mitch Kurzweil. York's defense gathered the puck and quickly passed it up to senior Matt Sabatini, who with blazing speed, skated down the ice into the offensive zone. He rifled a wrist shot and the rebound was pounced on by senior Matt Dufort who buried the puck in the back of the net, 3-1 York.

Plainfield scored the next two goals to make it 3-3. The tied score seemed to wake up the Dukes up who scored three unanswered goals in the next minute and six seconds. The first of the trio was set up by senior defenseman Daniel Byrne who swiftly skated the puck down the ice and made a sweet pass to senior Joe Hayes who put the puck in the net. The next goal scored 15 seconds later on a beautiful pass from hard working Kapsalis to Hayes. The third goal of the scoring spree came off a three-on-one break with getting the puck up to Dufort who made a tape-to-tape pass to Sabatini who scored with a hard top shelf wrist shot, 6-3 York. To finish the second period in style, Hayes picked up a rebound from a Levin shot and put it in the back of the net with authority for his third goal of the game and the period. This is not only a hat trick, but a natural hat trick which means all three goals were scored in one period. The second period ends with York Varsity up 7-3.

York padded their lead to begin the third period with a three-on-two odd man break. The rush was lead by Hayes who passed to Levin, who made a nice move around a Plainfield player and hit an open Kapsalis with a pretty pass. Kapsalis put the puck in to make it 8-3 York. The second York goal of the period came on the power play when Levin made a nice pass to sophomore Nick Lee at the point, who then made a pin point pass to Hayes for his fourth goal of the game, 9-3 York. The assist by \Levin on this goal was his fifth point of the game.

Plainfield scored again, to make it 9-4. To close out the scoring, York's Dufort scored an unassisted goal with 30 seconds remaining on the clock.

The York defense of Brandon Fuchsen, Byrne, Lee, Michael Rouzer and Sieracki controlled play in the second and third periods to protect the lead and their goalie. The York D only allowed two shots on goal in the second period and four shots on goal in the third period. Combined with some timely saves by York goalie Stasica, York walked away with a convincing win.
