The York Hockey Club varsity team came out firing on all cylinders against the Hinsdale Central Red Devils on Friday, Nov. 2 with six York players scoring goals in the contest.

The scoring began early in the first period when senior alternate captain Joe Hayes (aka Hazer) found himself all alone with the puck on his stick in front of the net and scored a nice top shelf goal thanks to the hard work of his line-mates, junior Joseph Levin and junior Marcos Kapsalis, who both earned assists on the goal.

Kapsalis set up the second York goal by working the puck down low in the corner with two Hinsdale players draped all over him. He broke free and made a perfect pass to Levin who promptly buried the puck in the net. At the end of the first period, it was 2-0 York.

Early in the second period York was assessed a roughing penalty, but the York penalty killers turned the tables and scored a huge shorthanded goal. The shorty was scored when senior Frank Carbonetti (aka Carbs) relentlessly pursued the puck and pressured the Hinsdale goalie as he attempted to coral the loose puck. The Hinsdale goalie and defenseman were not able to gain control of the puck thanks to Carbonetti’s tenacity and it slid out in the slot where junior Grey Miller picked it up and fired it in the back of the net, 3-0 York.

Hinsdale scored a goal late in their power play followed by another goal late in the second period to narrow to 3-2.

After that, York sophomore goalkeeper Parker Stasica bared down and stopped all 17 shots the faced in the second and third periods to help his team dominate the remainder of the game.

With less than three minuets remaining in the second period, York reestablished the two-goal lead when the forward line of junior Trevor Corsello, junior Ryan Pedote and sophomore Elliot Fafinski scored. Pedote set up the goal when he raced the puck into the offensive zone, then made a nice tape to tape pass to Fafinski who quickly connected with a wide open Corsello who fired a wrist shot that quickly found the back of the net, 4-2 York.

Early in the third period, Miller scored a goal in close with three Red Devils battling him for the loose puck just outside the crease. Miller stayed with it and got his stick on the puck and knocked it in, 5-2 York.

Late in the third period, the Corsello, Fafinski, Pedote line was clicking again, this time on an odd man rush. Fafinski skated the puck down the ice with his jersey flapping in the draft and made a beautiful pass to Pedote who rifled a wrist shot past the Hinsdale goalie.

To close out the scoring, senior Matt Sabatini (aka Sabs) fired a slap shot from the point with nine seconds left on the clock. York wins 7-2.
