York Hockey Club’s junior varsity team registered a pair of impressive league victories to extend the team’s win streak to 11 straight. The wins over Naperville Central and Waubonsie strengthened York’s position atop the Illinois High School Hockey League West Division.

York 5 - Naperville Central 0

On Friday, January 16th, York played host to the Naperville Central Redhawks. The Dukes struck first when sophomore Anthony Trankina deflected freshman Ethan Horne’s shot past the Naperville goalie. Two minutes later, junior Zach Johnson scored on assists by sophomore Scott Blair and Trankina.

Early in the second period, York added to the lead when freshman Matt Shepherd took a pass from sophomore Matt Davis and beat the Redhawks goalkeeper with a high wrist shot. Then freshman Josef Calzante scored on a high wrist shot of his own on assists by Trankina and sophomore Dominic Gatti.

Davis put the exclamation point on the victory when he found the back of the net on Johnson’s assist.

Freshman goalie Dylan Reynolds looked impressive holding off the Redhawks all night to record the shut-out victory for the Dukes.

York 4 – Waubonsie 2

On Sunday the 18th, York traveled to Aurora to take on the Waubonsie Warriors. Again, the Dukes jumped out to an early lead. Davis and Shepherd moved the puck through the zone to set-up Calzante for the game’s first goal. Before the end of the first period, the Warriors came back to score and tie the game at one. But the game did not remain tied for long. Less than a minute, later freshman Mark Feilen worked the puck down low to Horne who delivered a strong pass across to sophomore Jack Redick for a one-timer. Redick’s shot lit the lamp to give York a lead it would never surrender.

The Dukes scored again after the first intermission when Horne registered an assist on a goal by Redick. Twenty-three seconds later, freshman Jack Foley delivered a pass to Redick down low. Redick knocked home his own rebound for the hat trick.

York relied on strong team defense led by freshmen AJ Orlando, Liam Gardner, Jake McCreadie and sophomores Tom Albin and Anders Caster to fight off the hard charging Warriors' attempts to close the gap in the final minutes of the game. York’s goalie Nolan Knupp made 28 saves to preserve the victory.

The successful weekend improved the JV Duke’s league record to 21-1-2.
