York Ready To Turn Heads In SHL Action
By Ross Forman, 09/21/25
York should be a power this season in the SHL as they bring a highly-skilled attack, a longtime accomplished coach and a favorable start to the league schedule that should give them momentum that could last throughout the season.
In the Pre-Season Invitational Tournament, the Dukes contained defending state champion New Trier Green and led the Trevians 1-0 late in the third period before ultimately losing, 2-1.
The Dukes then crushed Providence Catholic 6-1, then lost 3-2 to the Plainfield Predators, a breakout team last year.
“This is a good (York) team. Can it achieve greatness? That comes down to commitment, passion, discipline and belief. The next six months will tell the tale,” said first-year York head coach Evan Poulakidas, who replaces Matt Boeing.
Poulakidas brings more than 30 years of coaching experience, most notably at perennial power Glenbrook North. In fact, the Spartans are the defending SHL Champion.
Poulakidas has had success at Saint Viator, Lake Zurich and elsewhere.
“The strength of this team is the overall depth, physical play and speed,” Poulakidas said. “The offense is built around four lines with each one capable of scoring. The defense is big, mobile and physical. The defense definitely poses some offensive firepower.”
The Dukes opted for three goalies and all three should see playing time, Poulakidas said.
Michael Barton and Patrick O’Leary, among others, had strong showings in the preseason tournament. Erhan Maurer and Jack Paschen will have key roles for the Dukes this season.
“The ability to win one-goal games is the key to a successful season,” said Poulakidas, who tagged New Trier Green as the SHL team-to-beat.
York starts SHL play with four of their first five games played at home in Addison. The Dukes also end the season with two of their last three games at home.
